Project Description

We love our fashion. Noted.

Love Notes is a joined project by fashion writer Lisa Goudsmit and photographer Laila Cohen. The series exist of editorial photographs, created with the help of stylist Anne Mertens, and – of course – love notes. Those small letters express the deep feelings we have for the objects we shine a light on in the photos. Our favourite jeans for example, the ever-perfect striped top, and the parka that makes us feel like we can make it through the rain. (You can start singing here Mariah) Appreciating the items that surround us were status quo decades ago – as was saving for that one piece you really, really wanted to get for your wardrobe. Nowadays, many consumers seem to have lost the contact with the clothing on their backs. And with the bags on their back, for that matter. We want to rejuvenate that sentiment for our wardrobes, especially for the items we invest in. Enjoy these Love Notes and go ahead, write your wardrobe one as well.

I don’t need square shoulders, I need ruffled cuffs!

Dear blouse,

Yes girl, you earned your (pink) stripes. Because who knew? Who knew that one single item could be so powerful. You have this talent of cheering me up, whenever I feel down. Having a blue day, I put on the pink-stripy sweetheart that you are, and I instantly feel better. Like last week, when I had a rough night and woke up discovering that my bike was stolen, then missed my train and got socking wet standing in the rain waiting for the next one. Thank you, because even though I hated the universe at that moment, I wore you and at least felt beautiful. At the same time, you also know how to make me feel powerful and in control. Some women say they feel better with a jacket on – you know, the whole ‘these shoulder pads give me masculine power’-story. To me, that is nonsense. I feel better when I feel feminine and soft: I don’t need square shoulders, I need ruffled cuffs! That extra fabric makes me feel royal: with your sleeves on, I look like the queen of England, King Elvis and Prince (the singer, not of England) all at the same time. ‘Could you be the most beautiful girl in the world?’ Hell yes Prince. Because these pink ruffles give me that royal rock ‘n roll-flavour one can only dream off. So whenever I feel like I want to be put in the spotlight – or sunlight, for that matter – I know I can count on you. Keep on rocking sister.
