Project Description

We love our fashion. Noted.

Love Notes is a joined project by fashion writer Lisa Goudsmit and photographer Laila Cohen. The series exist of editorial photographs, created with the help of stylist Anne Mertens, and – of course – love notes. Those small letters express the deep feelings we have for the objects we shine a light on in the photos. Our favourite jeans for example, the ever-perfect striped top, and the parka that makes us feel like we can make it through the rain. (You can start singing here Mariah) Appreciating the items that surround us were status quo decades ago – as was saving for that one piece you really, really wanted to get for your wardrobe. Nowadays, many consumers seem to have lost the contact with the clothing on their backs. And with the bags on their back, for that matter. We want to rejuvenate that sentiment for our wardrobes, especially for the items we invest in. Enjoy these Love Notes and go ahead, write your wardrobe one as well.

You are neutral in a way that makes Switzerland look like a boring dude.

Dear denim,

Thank you. (I am going to get sentimental, but please let me finish.) Thank you for being the spine of my wardrobe, the ruler of my closet. Or should I say: king of my everlasting indigo love affair. You are strong, yet flexible. You get along with all the other bones in my closet, and look great with every outfit. I adore how you are beautifully blue, but seem colourless. Not that you are tasteless or blank, but you are neutral in a way that makes Switzerland look like a boring dude. You have the gift of being a gets-along-with-everyone, but are outspoken at the same time. Even though I wouldn’t mind wearing just you and nothing but you (naked + only jeans = my favorite) I appreciate how you look great with a sweater and classy with a jacket. Cool with a leather coat, festive with a sparkling top. You get along great with sneakers, but also complement my boots and high heels. I love you as jeans, but you are interesting as a denim dress as well. Another great bonus-point: I appreciate how you are made with care. Not only are you produced in a sustainable matter; I also make you sustainable myself by wearing you for years. While your indigo may fade, it doesn’t devalue you. No, you get prettier as you grow old and pale. While wearing and tearing, your scuffs decorate you like the wrinkles in a face that saw it all. And whenever you rip too much, I just patchwork you like grandma’s favourite blanket. You earned those marks, and wear them with pride. Hence, I wear you with pride. Forever.
